Follow Your North Star
You're moving, you’re being swayed by the winds of change, and going with the flow, Life pulls you in a hundred directions — obligations, distractions, the gravity of other people's expectations — and somewhere in the noise, you lose sight of what actually matters to you.

There's a concept ancient sailors used: the North Star. Not because it was the brightest light in the sky, but because it never moved. While every other star wheeled overhead with the seasons, the North Star stayed fixed. Sailors didn't navigate by the brightest object. They navigated by the one that was the constant. We all have one, somewhere deep down. We know what we want. We know the inner calling song, the songs she sings — of the book we want to write, the body we want to build, the person we want to become. We can see it, sometimes in the middle of the night when the world is quiet. We see the land we're sailing toward, clearly.

The problem isn't vision. The problem is traction. It's directing the drive. Every day, a thousand small winds blow you off course. Procrastination whispers that you can start tomorrow. Comfort suggests you stay in the harbor. Fear points you toward the familiar, even if the familiar is sinking. And before you know it, you're not sailing toward the land anymore. You're just being blown around, hoping the wind eventually pushes you somewhere good.

I learned this the hard way. I'm a truck driver. I spend ten hours a day on the road, and for years, I used that time to think about everything I wanted to do — the records I wanted to record, the life I wanted to live, the person I wanted to become. I could see my North Star clearly. But every single day, I'd get home. I'd make promises to myself and break them by dinner. I'd say "tomorrow" so many times that "tomorrow" stopped meaning anything. The gap between knowing where you want to go and actually sailing there can feel insurmountable, but it's where transformation lives. It's the gap between vision and commitment. And that gap is where most people live. Here's what I realized: you don't need a better vision. You need to honour your word. Honoured is honouring the commitment you made to yourself.

So I started signing contracts with myself every day. Not metaphorical contracts. Actual commitments, written down, signed with my finger. "I will write 1000 words today." Sign. "I will walk 10k steps today." Sign. And at the end of the day, I'd either keep my word or I wouldn't. And if I didn't, that failure would be recorded. Not hidden. Not forgotten. Visible. True. Something shifted. When you sign a contract with yourself and you keep it, you're not just completing a task. You're building a record of your own integrity. You're proving to yourself that your word means something. And when you fail, you're not being punished — you're being shown the truth about who you are in that moment, and that truth, compounded over time, is what changes you.

Because once you see the gap between who you want to be and who you're actually being, you can't unsee it. And most people, when they really see that gap, decide to close it. That's when the real sailing begins. Your North Star doesn't move. It never will. But you have to make the choice, every single day, to sail toward it instead of letting the winds blow you wherever they want to. That choice is a contract. And the only person you're making it with is yourself. The question isn't whether you can see your North Star. The question is: will you sign the contract?
